DAWN: Data Acquisition With In-Vehicle Networks
HEM Data Products

Advanced Logging

The DAWN Advanced Vehicle Interface Tool (AVIT) Data Logger acquires OBD-II and other CAN bus data from cars, trucks, buses and off-road vehicles. The logger’s versatility allows it to operate as a stand-alone data logger, and when connected to a PC, it displays real-time data – whether it is connected directly to the PC, or by cellular or Wi-Fi network. DAWN emulates many test tools including a data logger, scan tool, flight recorder and event recorder. The DAWN Data Logger simultaneously acquires data from GPS, CAN bus, and analog signals directly from sensors with minimal setup time. The same Windows-based flowchart software configures PC-based data acquisition and the stand-alone logger.

DAWN’s extensive databases contain the information required to acquire the engineering parameters you want to acquire by combining the advantages of a data acquisition system with a scan tool’s ability to acquire a wide variety of parameters. DAWN acquires mixed mode data meaning it simultaneously acquires OBD diagnostic messages and messages that are transmitted due to normal vehicle operation.

DAWN reads the standard OBD trouble and pending codes as well as the manufacturer specific Enhanced Diagnostic codes. Data acquisition can be configured to start if a code is tripped. The user also has the option of defining a virtually unlimited number of additional conditions to monitor. If any of them occur the acquired data will be stored. This is extremely helpful for catching intermittent problems. The logger sends emails and text messages to alert you in a timely manner that specific conditions have been detected.

When connected to a modem the versatility increases exponentially:
• Automatically transferring data files back to the user, so there is no hassle in retrieving the data and saving travel expenses.
• Transmitting real-time data so the user sees real-time displays while sitting at his desk. Data transfer rates are 100X faster than most systems (400 samples/sec aggregate).
• Controlling the remote logger with DAWN’s Logger Panel whether you are in the vehicle or several states away. Start and stop the logger with a click of a button. Manage remote data and configuration as easily as on your local computer. Reconfigure the remote logger, update the logger’s software, or reboot it if needed – all through one interface.
