J1979 & J1939 Support

What vehicles use the J1979 protocol?

Vehicles that do not have a J1939 9-pin connector use the J1979 protocol. This includes vehicles that have a Volvo or Mack engine, and the medium duty vehicles that have an engine from a car company. If a medium-duty vehicle has Cummins or another HD diesel engine, they use the supported J1939 protocol.

Is the testing any different between a J1979 and J1939 vehicle? Does DAWN Inspector automatically detect the protocol used?

There is no difference to the user since the protocol is automatically detected. The only difference is that the adapter cable is needed for J1979 vehicles having the 16-pin connector.
