NetDDE and Windows

When running under Windows 95, you may not get the DDE In element to recognize a NetDDE compliant network. There are two tasks you must perform to enable this capability: add an entry to SM.INI (located in the DEFUSER directory of your installation), and run the NETDDE.EXE application.

Changes to SM.INI

Open SM.INI using a text editor (such as Notepad). Find the [Options] group and add a new line after it. The new line reads:

WFWEnabled=Yes

This enables the Network portion of the DDE In Conversation dialog.

Running NETDDE

The following information was extracted from a Microsoft Knowledge Base note regarding NetDDE and Windows 95 (PSS ID Number Q132736).

To run NetDDE programs in Windows 95, you must add a shortcut for Netdde.exe to the Startup group. To do so, use the following four steps:

  1. Use the right mouse button to click an empty space on the taskbar, and then click Properties on the menu that appears.
  2. On the Start Menu Programs tab, click Add.
  3. Use the Create Shortcut Wizard to create a shortcut for Netdde.exe in the Windows folder.
  4. After you create the shortcut, restart your computer.
